We Campaign
We all should have the right to conscientious objection; this right allows people to choose not to fund military-related violence or war with their taxes based on their held beliefs, whether they are moral, ethical or personal.
At Conscience: Taxes for Peace not War, we tirelessly campaign for legislative change, advocating for people to have the option of directing the entire military portion of their taxes towards peaceful purposes. Our ultimate goal is to create a society where national security is ensured through non-military means, fostering a more peaceful and just world.
We Educate
To achieve our goal, we conduct research and provide resources to further explore and develop arguments for non-military security.
Our focus is on developing effective peacebuilding and conflict prevention methods, offering more impactful and cost-effective alternatives to military interventions.
By educating and raising awareness, we strive to create a society that prioritises peaceful resolutions and sustainable security.
Our Mission
We campaign for a progressive increase in the amount of UK tax spent on peacebuilding, and a corresponding decrease in the amount spent on war and preparation for war.
We also campaign for the legal right of those with a conscientious objection to war to have the entire military part of their taxes spent on peacebuilding.
Our Vision
A world where our taxes are used to nurture peace, not pay for war.
A world where resources are harnessed to prevent and transform violent conflicts, creating opportunities for just and sustainable human development.
The Problem
In the UK we contribute to war, violence and killing, through our taxes.
Under the UK’s current tax system, people are not able to express their freedom of conscience, religion or belief by not paying for this type of violence.
For many people, diverting their taxes away from violence related to war to other forms of security is essential.
This is why we campaign for an update in the law, so that people with a conscientious objection to military taxation can have the part of their taxes currently spent on war and the preparation for war – approximately 6% – spent on peacebuilding and conflict prevention instead.
This is in recognition of the fact that we no longer face military conscription in the UK, yet we bear a moral responsibility for our contribution to the military through our taxes.
